SquiggleMum’s comments:

Chasing Shadows is a story about finding a way forward through grief and loss. This is a poignant picture book – beautifully told, and heart breakingly sad.

Beth is overwhelmed by emotions and sees only shadows where her mother once was. She isn’t ready for the puppy her father brings home, but perhaps the puppy can help in ways her father can’t.

Chasing Shadows isn’t necessarily a book for the classroom, however it will be a useful resource for those who work with children and families. Few books deal with grief through the eyes of a child, and Fenton’s expertise as a storyteller shines through. Sommerville’s sensitive illustrations give voice to Beth’s unspoken feelings, and the shadows show what Beth misses most about her mother.
