Welcome Home is the story of a Right Whale returning to the waters of Tasmania. As the whale approaches, it shares its history with a young local boy. The ugly truth about whaling is as confronting for the boy in the story as it will be for readers. His response is to apologise for the past – but will that be enough?
Welcome Home successfully explores the topic of whaling in a context appropriate for children, though younger readers may find it distressing. While there are no graphic images, the story is emotionally heavy.
The book concludes with a double page spread rich with information about Right whales, convict ships, and whaling. Comprehensive Teacher’s Notes are also available. I highly recommend this document if you are working with Welcome Home in the classroom.
