This gentle recount tells of a little girl’s day at the beach, from sunrise to sunset. The text is in present tense, giving the story a sense of “now” and helping young readers to enter the narrative. Finn’s warm illustrations complement the soft text.
“Start of the Ocean” is a nice example of independent publishing, although an editor’s touch is missing from the book overall. However, this doesn’t stop it being a sweet tale which families will enjoy reading together. It is definitely suited more to the home environment than the classroom.
- Early childhood
- Exploring simple sentence structure in present tense (I am standing, I am climbing, I am playing, I am swimming…)
- Talking about the beach (what can you see? hear? taste? touch? smell?)
- Beach holiday bedtime stories
